How to change domain nameservers

Connect a domain to UKC Parking, a UKC hosting server or another provider by changing where its DNS is managed.

Nameservers move the complete DNS service

Before changing them, confirm the destination provider has records for your website, email and any subdomains. Missing records can interrupt services even though the domain remains registered.

Use the nameservers for the service you want

UKC Parking
Choose Use UKC managed DNS in the Client Area
UKC Hosting
Use the ukc01.uk to ukc13.uk nameservers shown in your hosting welcome email
External provider
Use the exact nameservers supplied by that provider

If you only need to change one A, MX or TXT record while retaining UKC managed DNS, use DNS Manager instead of changing nameservers.

Submit the nameserver change

  1. Sign in and open Domains, then My Domains.
  2. Choose Domain Tools beside the domain.
  3. Open the Nameservers page.
  4. Select Use UKC managed DNS or Use another DNS provider.
  5. For a custom provider, enter at least the first two complete nameserver hostnames.
  6. Review the warning and save the change once the destination DNS zone is ready.

Registry and resolver caches update

UKC submits the change to the relevant domain registry. The new delegation can appear quickly, but networks and devices may temporarily retain the previous nameservers. During this period, different visitors can receive answers from different DNS providers.

  • Keep both the old and new DNS zones valid during the change where possible.
  • Check the domain's Diagnostics page for the nameservers currently visible publicly.
  • Allow up to 24 to 48 hours for older cached answers to disappear worldwide.

Check the spelling and domain status

Nameserver hostnames must be valid and must normally answer authoritatively for the domain. A registry lock, suspended domain, invalid nameserver or missing glue record can prevent an update.

Copy the complete error shown by the Client Area into a support ticket; it is more useful than reporting that the page did not work.

Still seeing the old nameservers?

Send us the domain, the nameservers you submitted and the exact error, if any. We can distinguish a rejected registry update from ordinary DNS caching.
