Hosting storage

Keep personal backups and media off web hosting

UKC web hosting is for active website, application and associated email data. It is not a replacement for personal cloud storage, computer backups or an unrelated media archive.

Website data belongsFiles actively used by hosted services.

Personal backups do notUse dedicated backup storage instead.

Keep independent copiesOne server should not be the only backup.

Appropriate storage

Store data needed to operate the website

Website code, databases, uploads, public downloads and mail associated with the hosted domain are normal. Optimise unusually large assets so they can be served efficiently.

Use another service

Move unrelated archives to purpose-built storage

Computer images, phone backups, private video collections, old installation archives and files unrelated to a hosted website should use encrypted backup or object-storage services designed for that purpose.

Resilience

Maintain your own restorable backup

Hosting data and server backups can be affected by account changes or wider incidents. Keep at least one current independent copy and periodically confirm it can be restored.
