An alias is not another mailbox
Mail sent to the alias arrives in the existing mailbox. The alias has no separate password, webmail login, folders or storage. Create a mailbox instead when another person needs a private inbox.
Choose the right tool
Alias, forwarder or mailbox?
- Alias
- Another address for the same Plesk mailbox.
- Forwarder
- Routes messages to a different internal or external inbox.
- Mailbox
- Has its own login, folders, password and storage.
Plesk
Add an alias
- Open My Services, select the hosting service and log in to Plesk.
- Open Mail and select the existing destination mailbox.
- Open the Email Aliases tab.
- Enter the additional address name and select OK.
Sending identity
Receiving at an alias does not automatically configure sending
Your mail application may need a separate From identity to send as the alias, while still authenticating with the main mailbox. Only use an address belonging to your domain and supported by the server configuration. Test delivery and replies before publishing it.
Remove safely
Check where the alias is used first
Before removing an alias, update websites, forms, printed material, account recovery addresses and contacts that still use it. Messages sent after removal may be rejected as an unknown address.
An alias is not receiving mail?
Send the alias, destination mailbox, domain, time of an external test and the complete bounce. Confirm the domain's MX route points to the Plesk mail service. Never send the mailbox password.
