Use an additional account for another person
The main subscription user may access more than one website and is tied to other hosting functions. Create a separate FTP account for a developer so you can limit its folder and revoke it without changing your own login.
Create access
Add an FTP account
- Open My Services, choose the hosting service and select Log in to Plesk.
- Open Websites & Domains, then FTP or FTP Access.
- Select Add an FTP Account.
- Choose a recognisable username and set the home directory to the smallest folder the user needs.
- Generate a strong, unique password and select OK.
Least access
Choose the correct home directory
- One website
- Use that domain's document root so other sites remain inaccessible.
- Uploads only
- Use the specific upload or working directory where possible.
- Whole subscription
- Only grant this when the user genuinely needs every hosted area.
An FTP account cannot browse above its configured home directory. This is the most useful control when several websites share one hosting subscription.
Ongoing access
Change a password or remove an account
- Return to FTP Access in Plesk.
- Select the account to change its password or home directory.
- To revoke access, select the additional account and choose Remove.
- Confirm that websites still operate normally after removing old access.
Remove accounts for former staff, completed projects and unknown users. Changing an FTP password does not change a mailbox or WHMCS Client Area password.
Do not send FTP passwords in a support ticket
UKC support does not need the password to diagnose connectivity. Share the server hostname, username, port, connection type, time of the test and exact error instead.
Confirm access
Test the new account before handing it over
- The account can connect using the UKC server hostname.
- It opens in the intended home folder.
- It cannot browse into unrelated websites or private directories.
- A harmless test file can be uploaded and removed where required.
FTP still will not connect?
Use our FTP connection guide before opening a ticket. If it still fails, include the hostname, username, port, connection type, time and exact error. Never include the password.
