Expired domains

Can "Expired" domain names be transferred?

Find out whether an expired domain can still transfer and when it must be renewed or restored first.

Recently expiredTransfer may still be possible
In redemptionRestore before transfer
Safest optionAct before expiry

It depends on the domain's current status

An expired ICANN-managed domain such as a .com may still be transferable while the registrant retains renewal and transfer rights. If deletion has progressed to Redemption Grace Period, it must be restored by the current registrar before it can transfer.

Check which stage the domain has reached

Active
Transfer normally, subject to registrar lock and other transfer rules
Expired / auto-renew grace
Transfer may still be possible; ask UKC to confirm the live registry status
Redemption Grace Period
The current registrar must restore the domain before transfer
Pending Delete or released
Transfer is no longer available and recovery may not be possible

Do not wait for a domain to be released

A released domain can be registered by anyone, and no registrar can guarantee that you will recover it. If the name matters, renew or transfer it while you still control it.

Ask UKC to check transfer eligibility

  1. Open a Helpdesk ticket from the UKC account that holds the domain.
  2. Ask us to confirm its registry status and whether the Auth/EPP code and registrar lock can still be managed.
  3. If it remains transferable, obtain the Auth/EPP code and start the transfer with the new registrar immediately.
  4. If restoration is required, review the restore and renewal cost before proceeding.

Check the resulting expiry date

Registry rules differ by extension and lifecycle stage. A transfer often adds a year, but a recent renewal or auto-renew grace transaction can affect how the final expiry date is calculated. Ask the receiving registrar what term it expects to add before paying for both renewal and transfer.

Use the .UK transfer process

.uk domains follow Nominet rules rather than the ICANN gTLD lifecycle described above. Ask UKC to confirm the domain's current renewal rights before requesting a registrar change.
