Choosing a domain

Choose the right domain extension

The extension is the ending after the name, such as .uk, .com or .shop. Choose one that fits the audience, organisation and long-term use rather than expecting an automatic search-ranking advantage.

Extension types

Understand country-code and generic endings

Country-code domains such as .uk can signal a national audience and may have local rules. Generic domains such as .com, .org and newer descriptive endings are not tied to one country unless their registry says otherwise.

Decision checklist

Ask what customers will expect

  • Is the extension familiar and credible to the intended audience?
  • Does the applicant satisfy any eligibility restriction?
  • Are registration, renewal and transfer terms acceptable?
  • Is the full name clear when spoken and used in email?

Search visibility

Do not choose a generic extension for SEO alone

Google says ordinary generic TLDs do not receive a ranking preference. A relevant country-code domain can provide a geographic signal, but useful content and a sound website remain essential.
