Every .au registrant needs a validated Australian presence. The exact eligibility and name-allocation rules then depend on whether you choose .au, .com.au, .org.au or another namespace.

Australian presence
Common routes include an Australian citizen or permanent resident, an Australian organisation, or a business identified by a valid ABN or ACN. The complete auDA definition includes other eligible person types.
Choose carefully
.au direct, .com.au, .net.au, .org.au and .id.au are not interchangeable. Business namespaces can require the name to match or be closely connected to the holder, while other namespaces have their own purpose.
During the licence
The registrar validates information at registration, renewal or transfer and may request evidence. If an ABN, organisation, trademark or other qualifying connection changes, check eligibility before renewing or transferring the domain.
A name is allocated only after the applicant also satisfies the current auDA eligibility and allocation rules.
