Domains and search

Choose a domain extension for people and search

A familiar, relevant extension can improve recognition and trust, but buying a particular generic extension does not create an automatic ranking advantage. Choose for audience, location and brand clarity.

SEO impact

Extension matters less than relevance and quality

Search visibility depends on crawlability, useful content, links, page experience and how well the site serves the query. A generic top-level domain such as .com, .net or a newer generic extension is not inherently promoted because of its ending.

Location

Country-code domains can clarify the intended market

A country-code extension is a strong visitor and search signal for that country. It is a good fit for a primarily UK audience; an international organisation may prefer a generic domain with language or country sections.

Decision checklist

Choose the name your audience will trust

  • Match the country and audience you actually serve.
  • Keep the domain easy to say, type and remember.
  • Avoid misleading, imitation or spam-associated wording.
  • If changing an existing domain, plan one-to-one redirects and Search Console updates.
