Transfer only if you are changing registrar

If you only want the domain to use a website or email service elsewhere, change its DNS records or nameservers instead. A registrar transfer moves registration management and future renewals to another provider.

Check the domain can be transferred

  • The domain was registered more than 60 days ago.
  • It has not changed registrar during the last 60 days.
  • It is active and not subject to a dispute, court order or registry restriction.
  • The registrant email address is current and accessible.

A contact change can delay the transfer

Changing the registrant name, organisation or email address may trigger a 60-day inter-registrar transfer lock. If the current details are usable, complete the registrar transfer before making an ownership change.

Unlock the domain and request its code

  1. Sign in and open Domains, then My Domains.
  2. Open the domain and select Registrar Lock.
  3. Disable the registrar lock so the domain is no longer marked clientTransferProhibited.
  4. Check the registrant email address under Contact Information.
  5. Request the domain's Auth Code, EPP code or transfer code through the available Client Area option or the UKC Helpdesk.

Start the incoming transfer

  1. Order an incoming domain transfer from the new registrar.
  2. Enter the domain name and Auth/EPP code exactly as supplied.
  3. Approve any transfer confirmation sent to the registrant email address.
  4. Follow the new registrar's status updates until the transfer completes.

A valid transfer usually completes within several days. The new registrar should tell you if another approval is required.

Registration moves; hosting does not

  • Future domain renewals move to the new registrar.
  • Existing nameservers normally remain unchanged during the transfer.
  • Website files, databases and mailboxes are not copied.
  • Keep any UKC hosting or email service active until its contents have been moved and tested.

Need the Auth/EPP code?

Open a ticket from the UKC account that holds the domain. Include the domain name, but never send account passwords.
